   South Dakota Ag News Headlines
Eminent Farmers and Homemakers Named

South Dakota State University named farmers from Meade and Sanborn counties as South Dakota's Eminent Farmers for 2010, and named homemakers from Brookings and Clay counties as the state's 2010 Eminent Homemakers.

SDSU chose Edward Blair of Vale and Merlin Van Walleghen of Letcher as Eminent Farmers, and honored Phyllis Sternquist of Centerville and Barbara Telkamp of Brookings as this year's Eminent Homemakers.

Barbara Telkamp of Brookings has always been known for her community involvement. She has been involved with Extension Homemakers Club and the University Week for Women, and she has served as a 4-H Club leader and a member of the South Dakota Extension Advisory Board. Not only does Telkamp support many clubs, she also has served on the governing boards of ADVANCE, Brookings Domestic Abuse Shelter, East Central Mental Health Center, Inter-Lakes Community Action (ICAP), and served for 12 years as a Brookings County commissioner.

Telkamp graduated from Washington High School in Sioux Falls and received an associate's degree in secretarial science from South Dakota State University. She served several years as Medary Township assessor and also worked part-time in the office of the Brookings County Director of Equalization. She currently serves as a board member on the Swiftel Center Advisory Committee.

In 1996, officials named Telkamp the South Dakota Volunteer of the Year for her work in setting up the juvenile holdover site in Brookings and her regional efforts to consolidate shelter, care, and facilities for juveniles. Telkamp is also recognized as the first woman to chair the Brookings Planning Board.

Telkamp was one of the founders for the Brookings County Red Hat Society. Many ladies have joined, and she serves as the president for the Le Chapeau Rouge chapter of the Red Hat Society.

Apparently this is a pretty big thing for that part of the country so Cindy and I will be at the Awards Banquet this weekend to support her mother. As a result, I won't make it fri night, sorry guys, but family comes first this time.

Very well actually, very impressive banquet. Good speech's by most of the recipients.
Lots of people coming up to her before and after with lots of good things to say.

The next morning we got a few things done around the place for them. By 2:00 that afternoon they were both looking tired and ready for a long nap so Cindy and I hit the road home.
